I’m in this phase where I’m drawn to more “elegant” designs. I’ve always preferred “subtle luxury” – nothing too flashy or modern but small hints that offer moments of class. My taste typically tends to lean more traditionally preppy with a hint of coastal influence (maybe a little french too). Here are some small things to incorporate around the house to make it look and feel more luxurious:
- Incorporate more glass items around your home. If you’re considering adding a shelving unit (or built in) – consider a glass moment. If your coffee table is lacking a little something, try adding a glass ashtray (Etsy, thrifted..) for your hand lotion or chapstick. You could also seek out a glass vase to add to your dining table with some fresh flowers (preferably white lilies or tulips IMO). Mirrors count as glass too!
- Mix up your metals. Gold can lean one of three ways, cheap, aged, or expensive. If you’re hesitant to add nickel – start small. Silver is more consistent and it’s a great way to incorporate a cool tone if your home is feeling too warm and needs balance.
- Display bottles of wine (preferably red) on your bar cart. When in doubt, go for the french wine. It tastes better and looks good too.
- All white ceramic dishware. Self explanatory.
- Cups and saucers. My favorite mugs are the ones that make me feel like I’m in Paris. I like somewhere to put my tea bag or spoon so it’s practical as well.
- Trim and moulding. The truth about beautiful homes is that it’s a lot to do with the architecture. If you pay attention to the small details – you can add those sculptural moments for a fraction of the cost. If you’re not renovating your entire home – try paying attention to one room at a time and keep your eye on the details.
- Window dressings. Curtains or roman shades are your best options. Adding fabric to your windows is just that, getting them fully dressed. If curtains aren’t in your budget, try roman shades or sewing your own curtain panels. The pleated look is best in my opinion if you’re doing full length curtains and if they can’t go down to the floor because of a heat source – try cafe curtains or skip the curtain option and go for a roman shade.
- Changing your light fixtures. Light fixtures are part of the architecture of a home – it adds everything to the space. An affordable swap for a “landlord special” light is a drum light or if you have the space for a simple shaded pendant- easy peasy. Lighting is fun – trust me.
- Be organized. Mess is not your friend when it comes to class. Organize your cabinets, shoes, pantry, you name it. You’ll feel better and it will look 10x better.
- Black and white aren’t the only options. If you’re trying to pursue a more modern home – color can be your friend. Stick with the colors of the beach.
- Don’t put too much on display. Keeping it simple leaves room to appreciate everything on its own. If you crown a room with too much, it can feel heavy and unapproachable.
- Coasters! It’s the small details here that matter. Spend time pretending you’re a guest in your own home. You’ll feel spoiled to have coasters available to you.
- Side tables! Make every space usable and interactive. It matters to have surfaces available for guests to put their phone, drinks, etc. Looking for a clear surface at a maximalist’s house can feel a little overwhelming.
- Textiles! Spoil yourself – add pillows and blankets where you want to cozy up. Comfort is key.
